AFGHAN HOUND
PUPPIES FOR
SALE
If you choose to buy an
Afghan Hound puppy instead of adopting one through Afghan
Hound Rescue of California or any other
rescue organization, please do your homework
first. Take the time to research the breed to see
if an Afghan Hound is compatible with you and your
families lifestyle. Additionally, take the time to
find a reputable Afghan Hound breeder who has been
recommended by The Afghan Hound Club of
America
or by an AKC affilliated
regional club .
Just because a "breeder" has a website and states that they are AKC [American
Kennel Club] affiliated does not necessarily make it true. Make a few phone calls and ask the experts at the links above who they would recommend.
This recommendation holds true for any one considering buying a dog of any breed. Visit the AKC website and click on BREEDS. Make a few calls to the national club for the breed that you are interested in, and to the regional clubs and get referrals to reputable breeders.

AFGHAN HOUND
BREED STANDARD
General Appearance:
The Afghan Hound is
an aristocrat, his whole
appearance one of
dignity and aloofness
with no trace of plain-
ness or coarseness.
He has a straight front,
proudly carried head,
eyes gazing into the
distance as if in mem-
ory of ages past. The
striking characteristics
of the breed-exotic, or
"Eastern," expression,
long silky topknot, peculiar coat pattern, very prominent hipbones, large feet, and the impression of a somewhat exaggerated bend in the stifle due to profuse trouserings-stand out clearly, giving the Afghan Hound the appearance of what he is, a king of dogs, that has held true to tradition throughout the ages.

AFGHAN HOUND
HISTORY
The Afghan Hound was discovered by the Western World in Afghanistan and surrounding regions during the 19th century, with the first specimens brought to England in the latter part of that century. Of the breed's origin and its history prior to then, little is known for certain. It was once believed that the Afghan Hound existed in Egypt thousands of years ago, with a second theory that the breed evolved on the steppes of Asia representing the original sight hound. A great deal of research has not provided proof for either of these speculations.

DESIGNER DOG VS
SHELTER DOG
Here's an interesting test.
Many so called "breeders" are mixing breeds of dogs and coming up with what they are calling "designer breeds", mean while animal shelters/pounds across North America are filled to the brims with these same mixed breeds.
Try your hand at the test at the
link above and see how you fair. And please keep your
results in mind the next time you are ready to make a
new addition to your family.
